Their side:
To all our loved ones,
We will soon reach the seven month mark since the day Tomer entered this world and I casually asked Offer what happened with the X-ray he had the week before.
Like the usual cliche, the sky fell on us that day, and during the past six months we have been walking through this tunnel called cancer, chained inside without escape watching the light at the end of the tunnel which was, luckily for us, there from the beginning.
But the truth is, the sky did not fall on us. From the start it was held by all of you, our loved ones, and if we felt anything, it was only drops of pain and difficulty. The sky itself stayed in the sky.
You were all our shield.
First and foremost our parents. Words can not describe the amount of help, practical and other, going to treatments with Offer, taking care of the children, helping with daily housework, giving a hug and a kind word of encouragement and keeping us always in good spirits with a firm belief in our power to heal and get better.
And now to other family members and friends:
From the first moment, from that X-ray, we leaned on you,
You were the ones that helped us understand this was cancer, and helped us get treatment as soon as possible.
You came to chemo treatments with Offer – a very big thing. This helped to get through a bad situation by making it fun, and also demanded from the person that came to take a whole day off, which we know is not simple.
You visited or called consistently and expressed interest, showing your concern and care, making sure you knew what was going on and catching us up with what's happening with you .. maybe we did not show you how much we appreciated this. This is exactly what helped getting through these rough times in life, and showed us how much you care and want to help us.
You brought us food, and you come to our house to cook for us, you gave us a portion of every meal you prepared for your family. It was you who took our children from their childcare for us, you who took them in to your home as if they were your own, and after that suggested you return them home after dinner and a shower. You were the ones that caught us before we fell and broke down, the ones that came to talk and hug and encourage us RIGHT NOW, you were the ones that helped even when we did not ask, who took Nova for walks, who went to the supermarket for us, who came to be with the kids and give us a few moments to breathe and relax.
It was you who asked how we were doing, every time we met.
You who gave our children more gifts than we can count.
You who were not afraid to deal with something unpleasant.
All of you who hoped and prayed and thought about us, and sent us energy.. we felt it.
You all wrote us messages on whatsapp , and Facebook, and texts, and emails.
You who got back in touch with us after we haven't spoken for years, and brought a smile to our faces.
It was you who allowed us to cry and complain and made us believe in our ability to get through this.
You who were proud of us and there for made us proud of ourselves.
I'm talking about you, our siblings and in-laws, and uncles and aunts, our grandmothers, our cousins and other amazing relatives, and about you, our childhood friends and coworkers, and our friends from university and from the lab and the army, our friends from lovely Indiana, and families and teachers of our children's childcares – Gan Noi and Gan Oshrit. All of you who became closer to us, in a time when being close to us was not easy.
You are amazing people! Your help and support was so important for us. And it was clear and evident especially after a year abroad, being away from you. It is difficult to imagine how we would have gotten through this without you all around us.
This is probably our last post. Our story dealing with the disease is not over yet, and probably will never finish completely. Offer still had a long rehabilitation process ahead, and so does his immune system. But we think we've reached a place where we can cope better, and we won't need a place to vent like we used too, and in addition we hope the next period of our lives will be pretty boring without all kinds of harsh treatments and hospitalizations, so we wouldn't want to waste your precious time 🙂
Thanks to everyone who read, who responded or who only wanted to stay informed and to know what is going on. You are always welcome to call or visit ..
Yael will probably think of a new idea for a blog and will tell you about it soon.
Love
Yael and Offer
